The Senyera is considered to be the oldest flag of the world and the oldest in Europe to be used in
present day. Senyera means standard or banner and is also a synonym of bandera (flag).
The Senyera pattern, often called bars of Aragon or 4 bars, was based on the coat of arms which
historically represented the king of the Crown of Aragon. Today, it is the flag of the Autonomous
Community of Catalonia, an autonomous community of Spain comprising of four provinces
including Barcelona, the largest metropolitan area in Europe.
Catalonia is a top-class tourist destination in Spain with multifaceted landscape, colorful
festivals and different traditions. In November 2012, the Catalan Government has introduced
a tax on stays at hotels where minimum amount per day applied to the first seven nights
of any stay has been established. The tax aims to use the revenue in tourism promotion
and development. For more information: http://www20.gencat.cat
